Add some texture in the bump channel of the surface to make it more realistic. Add some reflection with a gradient.

Don't have any images but make sue you ace refraction index. Maybe about 1.4

What you're looking for is the dielectric node.
Have a look at the scene I added.

I tried to open it up in LW but nothing came up. It looked like a blank layout.

What are your render settings? Do you have your raytracing turned on? Open your Render Global panel go to the Render tab. Make sure you have your settings right.

Good Luck

I have no idea what could cause that. You are using 9.6, right?

The setup is much like what is explained here: http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78198, except I added a little bump to the water surface.

Perhaps you should change the background color to a gradient. A HDR image in the texture environment would help a lot for realism.

A bit down on the page..

http://ict.debevec.org/~debevec/Probes/

and some on this site..
http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93122&highlight=free+hdr

and you of course would like to check the free sIBL plugin wich handles setting up hdr images.

http://www.hdrlabs.com/news/index.php?id=4134067199699569773

also do a search on wikipedia on hdr images.

However, Im not sure you would get that much more realism in water surface with hdr imaging thou, hdr image rendering can be time expensive.

learning and tweaking other standard material and surfaces might be enough for water.

prometheus: sure, but to have fast interesting reflections, a HDR is a 'simple' solution.
