I asked this a couple years ago but I'm not sure if someone has come up with a cool program to do this for Mac. I'm looking for a free program to convert files into LW readable files. I also have the newest Blender as well but I'm not sure if I can convert files that way. Any thoughts?

I use Blender for Mac all the time to convert files to LWO. Usually, there is some cleanup involved, though. For example, I'll use Blender to convert Sketchup collada to LWO. Lightwave natively imports 3DS and OBJ.

but what about if it's from 3D Max or Cinema 4 that doesn't naturally import to LW format? Also, is there a free plugin to get rid of triangles?

Forget about Max converters - even commercial converters need a 3dMax installation to do the conversion. I think your best bet for those is either install the trial version, or ask a 3dMax user nicely.

Same story for C4d files, I am afraid :-( And their trial does not even support export of objects. So, in a nutshell, C4d and 3dMax ARE the converters you are looking for.

Blender converts triangles to quads - but doesn't LW do that as well? Ah, googled it: http://www.flay.com/getdetail.cfm?ID=1394

There´s also the free program true space, not exactly saving to lightwave formats, but some other useful import and exports perhaps.

it exports...
Direct export to Virtual Earth (workspace)
• Improved X format (workspace)
• BVH animation and motion capture
• 3D formats: SCN, COB, CAN, WRL 1.0 & 2.0, DXF, ASC, 3DS, STL
• 2D formats: • BMP, TGA, AVI, JPG, TIFF, PNG, PSD

it imports...
BVH animation and motion capture
• DXF format (full layer support) compatibility
• 3D Formats: SCN, COB, SOB, WRL 1.0, GZ, WRZ, DXF, 3DS, ASC, PRJ, LWO, OBJ, LWB, IOB, GEO, STL
• 2D formats: BMP, TGA, AVI, FLC, JPG, DIB, AI, PS, EPS, PNG, DDS

Unfortunatly this software was abused by software designers, and microsoft investments.
The UI was becoming an endless icon pile of junk mess, and all the real time virtual stuff feels like a playground.

And not available for Mac. But I can vouch for Accutrans - it has gotten me out of some tight spots in the past.

Biturn (http://mirex.mypage.sk/index.php?selected=1) has been helpful to me in the past. It's not for Mac, but still, 't might be useful to some others.
