Hi i have a PLE for e-on's Vue 8 Xstream and I just made a mountain photo:
...

I'm having trouble with attaching the file.
anyway, is there a way to make a lightwave texture similar to the snowy mountain terrainscape in Vue? I'm convinced that there's some way to do it; because :lightwave Right?

You could try using gradients to restrict the snow to the higher elevations of your terrain.

I made a video tutorial about this here (http://www.captainmarlowe.fr/crbst_4_en.html) some time ago. It's in French, but hopefully actions on the screen will be self-explanatory.

Hmmm... I can't open the link. Could somebody send me a .srf file?

Umm..I donīt know about this, but you might wanīt to try..

I guess you have a mountain in a lightwave object format?

Canīt you import that in to vue 8 ple and texture it there and then export the texture out and back to lightwave, not sure if this is limited in the ple version, Ivīe just started playing with the ple myself and havenīt had the time to test that.

Last time I tried this kind of trick, it was with Vue 7 PLE, and I ended with nice textures covered with "e-on software" watermarks. Note quite what I expected... :)

yah, that still exists in version 8.

this is what I've used, and it looks pretty good, and even better with radiosity on.

...err, I'm having link trouble. anyone know how to upload a .srf file?
;D *ahem* in other news, I'm rendering a big mountain scene, and It gives me this error saying, "treating polygons as faces". anyone know what that means?

SonicN2O

also, anyone know how to make good lightwave trees? (Xfrog is NOT and option.) and how do you attach them to a textured displacement landscape?

Dont think thereīs any free plugin for creating treeīs directly in lightwave, (ohh how I wish for an L-system in core)..except for modeling them yourself with various techniques, youīll probably better of invest a little in tree designer..check the features in the right corner of this page..

http://www.polas.net/trees/index.php

http://www.polas.net/trees/shaping.php
http://www.polas.net/trees/examples.php

Dpont has a free tree cage plugin..
http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/TreeCage_Lscript.htm

or sumatra, with a few models free, but no tree creation capabilities..only painting of vegetation.
http://www.svenart.de/sumatra_about.htm

you could use tree cage and perhaps fiberfx to create leafes polys on to the tree cage, or in Layout add a particle Partigon emitter to that tree and save out as transformed object, from that object you could clone leaf geometry on to those particle points.

for tree placement you could also use particle emitters in layout on the terrain and use fx linker to clone trees, or if you want in modeler save out transformed object and clone them in modeler.

thereīs also other technique options in modeler to clone..

And you can also try Arbaro (http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/), which gives correct results at a not to high polycount.

:(:oye::cry: aww, you opened up an old wound...
I looked at the powel oas tree plugin and:
1. It's too expensive.
2. I use a mac!
and sadly, it doesn't come for the mac OS.
But thanks for reminding me about treecage. it's worth looking in to.

SonicN2O

if it taste really good it most often costīs something, and since youre
Trying out vue 8 pl? and perhaps are interested in it in a future for something, then you should put some money away, cause that one isnīt cheap compared to tree generator plugins.

Why would you work with ple8 otherwise?

the other way to go is to simply start learning how to model treeīs yourself, tree cage or gene are free and can help for creating the base branches.

I havenīt tried dryad and donīt know if its under construction
http://dryad.stanford.edu/

Germinator is a sort of an L-system wich I myself never have had good luck thou to understand and use.
http://3drecursions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46

Gene is a branch tentacle generator ..
http://www.lwplugindb.com/Plugins/c6ce4031/gene.zip

donīt know if hypergroover works with later lw versions either
http://www.lwplugindb.com/Plugins/b3347536/HyperGrover.zip

another thing you might wanīt to test, would be houdiniīs L-system, if you download houdini apprentice wich is free...it should work to export out created L-system branches as objects and add leaves in lightwave, in fact you could probably create flowers and leaves in houdini all in all if you learn it, perhaps even animated growth and export as mdd, You should be allowed to use this for any demo reel you would like to show off, but Itīs not allowed for commercial work.

That might be a case of Mac problem, I decided long time ago not to start using Mac for quite a while in the future to avoid all that hazzle.

But maybe Itīs something else?

I just downloaded the tree cage 7,5b version and tried it on a vista 32 system and Lw 9.6 and it works fine with the base parameters at least.

The method it's WRITELN (I put on capital letters so you notice the difference between WRITEIN and WRITELN).

I think the line should be:

TreeCageFile.writeln("TCDATA 1.5");

If you are on a MAC, it could be a MAC related bug with the writeln function on LScript.

I just installed TreeCage on LW 9.6 64 bits under Vista 64 Business and it works fine here.

Works fine on a mac too (at least for me), but, on the mac, trying to generate leaves tends to create problems.
My advice would be to create to treecage with the lscript and then create foliage with FFX modeler.

I tried using HVs, and it didn't work.

prometheus

I tried using HVs, and it didn't work.

What do you mean didnīt work? in what way?
Were not talking about using hypervoxels here HV emitter is just another
type of particle emitter wich isnīt a polygon particle emitter, Itīs just adapted for use with hypervoxels.

Even though you can use hypervoxels for foliage in volume mode or using images on sprite clips thatīs not what were mentioning here,

If you select your terrain and open your properties for that object, you can add a particle emitter under the dynamics tab/add dynamic-emitter.
set nozzle to object surface.

set generate by frame and have equal amount as in particle limit.

To add trees to that you should use dynamic fx-linker, make sure you check view particle size, and make sure they have a size otherwise you wonīt see any trees, in fx linker choose the tree object you have made somewhere.
having variations is another issue thou.

one thing that might have been not mentioned, you need to calculate particles for them to follow the terrain.

Michael

SonicN2O
10-17-2010, 08:37 AM
Ok, I'll try that, but while we're on the subject, how do you get the shape of a collision object to follow the displacement? I tried using the default settings, and it failed miserably.

SonicN2O
10-23-2010, 09:25 AM
To add trees to that you should use dynamic fx-linker...

I know I'm going to sound :screwy:, but what's dynamic fx-linker?

SonicN2O
10-23-2010, 09:30 AM
Never mind...

prometheus

I know I'm going to sound :screwy:, but what's dynamic fx-linker?

FX_DynamicLinker is probably hidden in standard default preference Ui, you should really setup your own dynamics menu tab and sort those in there, otherwise Itīs hidden under utilities/plugins/additional-fx_dynamiclinker.

if you want to set it up in a menu? go to edit/edit menu layout..
Do a search for FX_DynamicLinker and left mouse button click and drag to the right side under the group you want it to be or use assign.

Dynamic fx linker is almost the same as fx linker, but it will keep particles sizing and rotation in relation to what you do with the particles.

SonicN2O

CaptainMarlowe

Arbaro let you export your trees with uv-maps on the leaves in .OBJ with MTL
Just import in lightwave, apply textures on the trunk and the leaves, save in lwo, and there you go.
Very efficient, and not too high poly (allthough your trunk will certainly need subpatching in the end). :)

CaptainMarlowe
02-14-2011, 02:52 AM
I'm currently at work, so I don't have access to Ligtwave.
Here's a sample of an arbaro tree created in a few minutes on my eeepc then exported in .obj to wings3D and rendered in Povray via wings. No textures applied yet, but it may come with an interesting result...

Edit : 36K polygons, here.
