This is just insane. I kind of knew about the density of new findings but till you see it you don't realize I/you know nothing.

Astronomer and programmer Scott Manley, formerly of the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland, has created a movie showing 30 years of asteroid discoveries in only 3 minutes. Warning: Feelings of claustrophobia have been reported among some viewers. It's crowded out there!

there's ALOT out there but you have to take a few things into account..

the animation of the asteriods is not to scale..those dots for each one are not the size of them in relation to our home planet...they just represent that they are 'there' some asteroids are TINY...

all the sci fi films show asteriods as knocking next to one another yet in reality there's 10's of thousands/hundreds of thousands of miles between each of them and they may only be a few hundred feet in size themselves..

we're also looking DOWN on the orbits...
the orbital plane is quite THIN for the planets...i'd like to see if the asteiods are all in/near that plane or not.

Gotta appreciate the 'big daddy' planets taking most of the heat for us. :D

Being a person that works with N-Body systems almost daily I must see this different then most. Yes almost all of these are on the smallish side, yes there are still vast distances between the non-knotted ones, yes the combined mass is still on the small planetary side. But look at the rate they have been discovered at, think about all the gravitational interactions that happen between them, and funner yet, could happen. From that stand point its just freakin beautiful in my mind.

Cresshead to answer your question, even though you are looking down onto a projected plane the belt is still pretty planar. Granted there is more smearing above and below that plane but for the most part it is planar. Even if they had not been part of another solar body and had all been left from the early accretion events they would still end up planar.

there seems to be a lot of traffic up there ... and 'luckily' they all follow the same path more or less ( no crossroads =) ) .

there is a legend / theory that interprets the " asteroid belt " , but anyway , if they have been doing it quietly for all these centuries they will continue to do it ... looks much more scientifically probable within our lifetime ( till we meet with our own mistakes ) .

one question though ; how do scientists identify them ? name them ? follow them ? it is unbelievable this one too in itself ...

they should easily know and help me find the left shoe i've been searching for two days . =P
