View Full Version : Random image from sequence?

Hi everyone. I'm no Nodal Master but I'm feeling pretty please with myself!!

I'm building a book that has loads of pages, most of which won't be seen but need information on them. With the help of db&w's tools I've been able to give all my pages different textures using only one surface.

I'm now thinking that it would be useful to texture these pages further by using frames randomly selected from an image sequence.

Is this possible? I've attached where I'm at. It's so good not to have a ton of layers with a ton individual surfaces :)

Any alternative approaches more than welcome!

I don't believe you can have the node reference multiple frames of an image sequence on a per spot basis.

You can put all of the pages on one large image and use a UV map offset by a random amount(multiplied by u and v size of the pages to make it always land on a full page) for each one.

Don't if it works for your project,
but Image Map node (DPKit)
has a frame input to select it
in a given image sequence.

you could just use a renamer utility on your sequence that has a random feature.

I think the Image Map node might just do it. Is there a node that will convert one range of values linearly into another range of values (ie 0-1 translated to 1-11, for instance (it's called "linear" in After Effects expression land)).

don't laugh at me but has this got a cat in Coventry's chance of working? Think I'm assuming a lot of the Image Map node (or my knowledge of nodes at any rate!). I've set my image seq to display 1fps so everything is remapped from 0-1 to 1-11 (the number of frames in my image seq).

As far as I know, no, i doesn't. That's because Denis' node (and he may want to correct me here) only evaluates the Time input at the beginning of the frame, bit during the render (which would cause massive havoc within LW I'd assume).

Thanks Mike, think I'll go the long way round but glad I tried it.

That'll be a lot of image and mixer nodes when a double-sided image is a added. I think it'll be simpler (and easier to follow to nodes!) with multiple surfaces in future. The basic approach will be handy for future projects, though.

That'll be a lot of image and mixer nodes when a double-sided image is a added. I think it'll be simpler (and easier to follow to nodes!) with multiple surfaces in future. The basic approach will be handy for future projects, though.

You could also pipe multiple image nodes into a single gradient node with published keys.

Yes, that's basically what I'm doing, same as my first post but showing the output of each colour and plugging my mixer into that :)

Thanks for all your help.

This is what I've ended up with. 11 images randomly spread-out over x amount of pages all using one surface. Should be enough to give the illusion of a full book while flipping through the pages. Each mixer has a front and back image, one for the front of the page, one for the.... you get the idea :thumbsup:

Yikes. Can you explain the theory behind the operation of this network, please?
