Speed Modeling Challenge #93 - Jules Verne v H. G. Wells
*************************************************
Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.
3. LightWave should be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

*************************************************

This week's topic: Jules Verne v H. G. Wells

Do you like Jules Verne and H. G. Wells novels??

Well..it's the great sci-fi challenge...everything you can think of, including the work of other writers.

Heck, don't stop there...try current and old TV shows...movies, old sci-fi magazines. Create your favorite sci-fi vehicles, objects, buildings, robots flying contraptions...any item at all. The style can be retro, futuristic, steampunk, cartoon...it's all up to you.

Time Limit - 60 to 120 minutes....as much or as little as you can spare :)

Deadline - Wednesday 25 August 2010, 2200 GMT

Why do I get a sense that everyone will make some quick stuff with some certain plug-in I do not have..

I just recently finished reading "The war in the Air" by H.G.Wells and previously read "The Master of the world" and "Rubur the Conqueror" by Jules Verne. All excellent reading and I thought why not...hehe

Oh so many great choices, double the time limit, damn the fact school starts but I'm going to find time for this one. Now to cut the near infinite list down to a doable concept!

I'm a big Iain M. Banks fan. Plenty of scope there. Hmmmm......................

Its been a while :)
I managed to find a usable hour to do a slightly modernized version of the Nautilus.
It could do with some detail, with any luck another hour will come my way to add some.

A quick bit of detail and the obligatory undersea render.

A quick bit of detail and the obligatory undersea render.
I'll give it an 8.5 on the coolness scale... (Would have been a full on 9 with some underwater mountains.. :) )

Curious... did you put the little black spots on the render or did those turn out to be render artifacts?

They are the particles that are outside of the direct lighting. I was going to fix it to lighten them a wee bit but laziness struck and I decided that it would do :D

Aghh no time this week again! Too late but I wanted to do something anyway.

Full hour but I reckon I'd need 2 or 3 to get this right. One of the diving helmets from the Kirk Douglas version of 20,000 Leagues..........

Kuzey
08-26-2010, 06:49 AM
Ooooh...that is sexy Iain and great work everyone else as well....good to see Richard taking part as well...super render as always

Here is mine, Butteridge's Flying Machine from "the war in the air"

Time: 1.5 hours.

ps. if people want to extend this challenge for another week...it's fine by me. Otherwise, Salv8or can start the next challenge when he's ready

I have an idea of something I'd like to do but can't do it till this weekend. However if I'm alone in this go ahead and start the new one!

Kuzey
08-27-2010, 08:15 AM
Ok...looks like we have an extension...:hey:

I might have a go at the other diving helmet from 20,000 Leagues.....the one with a touch on the front.

ps....For anyone interested, I uploaded the first part of the spider chair video...two more parts to come:

Laugh at the mistakes I do, as I try to model something interesting....no sound.

Spent another hour and a half on this, most of it trying to figure out how to make the wings "work" and then I remembered that its just a still :D

LOVE that DragonFly-bot!

Sadly I have only about 30 minutes left of my two hours and about another 100 hours to go. But at least my version of the Nautilus is finally looking like something more then a blob. Its amazing the horrible, cheat, shortcuts one makes with tight time constraints. Ugly ugly ugly ones but hey they work, sort of. I'll probably sneak my last 30 minutes in later tonight or in the morning and will then post with embarrassed fingers.

I went a bit over time on the Dragonfly myself.
Looking forward to seeing how your Nautilus comes out.

Well I stopped at ~1:50. Its far from finished and not exactly the best techniques. But here's a first look at my Nautilus. I'll post better images tomorrow. For now its back to traffic numerical modeling (BORING!)

Sorry for the lack of wow with the following images. I literally popped into Layout set the scene up, rendered, grabbed a wires SS and posted in-between class, as in less then 10 minutes. But I got it done and in so I'm happy enough.

Sorry guys..Took a to big bite this time.. Think Im in on around three hours by now and no where near finished, but I got a bit carried away and had a lot of fun.. Another one that I have to continue....

Be sure to take a look at next weeks.. Should we run it until next sunday?

aurora

Hey, take 4, its looking really nice! I wanted to do the Time Machine too. But knew I would never get it done. Ran into that problem anyways.

I hope you keep working on it. At least you stayed with decent methodology. My fines on my Nautilus suck so much I need to throw them away and start over.

Man...this one is hard to judge, lots of excellent models. I would love to have a 5 way tie...btw, we should try that one day :hey:

So......the winner is the Steam Lad, just because I like robots so much...well done Richard

@ Salv8or & aurora, I hope to see those models finished one day, they are looking super cool :thumbsup:

Ps....I finished my Nemo weapon...hehe
