View Full Version : Record Piv Rot makes heading vertical

I know we've discussed Gimble Lock on bones before, but here's a new twist on it for me.

I have a flat film strip in the Y axis. Wanting to add bones to it, to twist and bend it, I draw 1 bone that covers the entire length. Then, I split that bone into 48 smaller parent/child bones. Now, that creates Gimble Lock on the very bottom bone. When I use Record Piv Rot (+P) on the bottom bone, it takes care of the Gimble Lock problem, but it turns the Heading circle to a vertical position.

Is there anyway to assure that the Heading, Bank, and Pitch of a bone can be put in their proper beginning alignments?

Thanks for any and all help!

Proper way to do it is to model the strip going down the Z axis instead, so you wouldn't have to rotate the root bone or use RPR in the first place.

Another option is to just put something in between the mesh and the root bone to pick up the slack (the unwanted rotation). Size it real small so it's easily ignored, if its a bone, make it inactive or 0% strength.

Use the Rotate pivot tool to control your pivots more precisely.
