View Full Version : ICE-based dynamics. Awesome stuff...

Even though itīs a third party tool and not an Autodesk effort, this looks a step above what everybody else is doing right now both in quality and speed of processing.

Yes, this it great stuff.
(Another guy NT should hire for Core ;) )

I looove ICE... But to be fair it was developed by the great folks at Softimage. A program that is 100% awesome.

Actually, this Lagoa thing is not something as much ICE-dependant as dev-dependant. Meaning that Thiago Costa implemented his solver on ICE probably because it was an environment that he knew well, and that allowed him to work directly on Softimage.

The very same solver could probably be ported to a number of different environments, although to be sure we would need to know how many ICE native tools are there, along with the solver which obviously is custom stuff.

The Great thing about it being in ICE is that if it is like other ICE plugins such as EMFluids, or EMFlock, you can use other ICE nodes/compounds to tailor the Simulation to your needs and have it interact with other ICE-driven elements in the scene.

So whilst I am sure that Thiago could have made the same solver for Maya or Max etc, it probably wouldn't be as flexible to interact with and customise, because unless they were a houdini user they wouldnt have the equivalent of ICE to do so.
They would be limited by the authors design intent.

yup...I was thinking on a Houdini port :D

That was truely awsome. To bad I havent worked in XSI since 3.something, and I cant say that I enjoyed working with it back then. Perhaps much have changed.

...anyone knows how long these simulations take to calculate?

At 1:50-ish, you can see the frame rate displayed as stuff is being edited. It seems pretty fast.

Its been a pretty good year for Softimage so far. Here are two other plugins that have been released for SI.

As far as speed goes. I havent seen any numbers but below is a copy and past from a thread at CGTalk

Insofar everybody who used it/tested it agrees that it's one of the fastest and most scalable solutions around for SPH style work.
It's seen production use in a couple places well before it even made it into Softimage's beta (predators in hybrid etc.)

That Thiago dude that wrote Lagoa also worked on Exocortex Slipstream. The company hired him directly to help them create the plugin. I read it on his blog. That's one talented, in-demand XSI guru.

Isn't Lagoa part of XSI?

That guy has been working on his doctorate for a long time. Nice to see it come to fruition for him.
An amazing engine.

Just had a chat with Thiago ( wich is brazilian too ) and he doesn't have plans to do LAGOA for Lightwave at this moment once Lightwave does not support the elements he needs.

So keep dreamming with Bullet wich is what we had. Do we have bullet?

11-28-2010, 05:57 PM
yes, and it should be possible to make something similar for CORE...

What are these missing elements?

A nice recent example ..

What are these missing elements?

...Oh yeah, the CORE itself lol.

I love ICE and the procedural modeling via it, crazy *** tools! I wish I could wrap my head around it hehe.:D
