Ever seen the drobo units?

they are quite neat. anyone know of a good DIY way of making one?

Drobo is not good for video production work except as off line backup.

Try Synology if you want a decent NAS/raid solution...for online/offline.

That is only one of several units that will work.

Drobo is not good as active storage.

Drobo FS is rated as an NAS system. It has speed, a fast interface, and a large system for memory.

Check out the Drobo page, things have changed.

Interesting. I've bought a NAS a couple of months ago, it's a shame didn't know about this option.

We use drobo's for off cluster archive storage. Heck they even work on lustre systems which is a miracle considering lustre. Makes life wonderful when you model cranks out several terabytes of data!
