Speed Modeling Challenge #89 - Minions
*************************************************
Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.
3. LightWave should be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

*************************************************

This week's topic: Minions

I can't think of anything more appropriate then dedicating this weeks challenge to minions in honor of the animated movie I have been waiting for most this year, "Despicable Me'.

Design your own minion whether it is one like the ones in the movie or a creature of your own design.

The only other requirement is to have fun in the process!!!

Time Limit - 60 minutes.

Deadline - Wednesday 14th July 2010, 2200 GMT

Awesome topic! But I actually have a question: How come the challenges don't have their own forum or sub-forum here at the NT forums yet? I mean, they've been going on for a long time now, it would be great to see it have it's own section...

Just my two bits.

It would be great if we had a sub-forum.

Sometimes I can't find the next challenge even when I'm looking for it!

Thanks, guys; gotta love catmull-clark - the savior of sloppy modelers everywhere! THere are a ton of 5+ point polies in there... :) Will upload him in a few minutes, and since this one was so much fun, I might try another...

nice entry ignus...I've never tried CC, i thought it's supposed to be evil  no but seriously there's load of first class modelers that use Ngons :)

Nice one Sampei-lots of character in such a little body.

I just copied the reference posted since I've never seen these before.
Since I'm on holiday and getting ready to fly off to sunnier climes, I thought mine should reflect me on a beach............

Wow... great entries everyone!!

I tried to go with a more of a robot minion. I was thinking along the lines of the little guys from Farscape. It has little wheels on the bottom as well. I'll try to get a render out this week. About 50min modeling time. :)

Holy Crap, what kind of reward for winning is it to run a challenge if I alone have to choose a winner? Does using a dart board and blindfold count?
Great minions guys!!!

Here's another entry - Demon Minion. I'm not as happy with this one, but it was still fun to try...

way to go low poly...do you still have ngons in there? are the eyeballs textured procedurally ? nice work.

IgnusFast
07-12-2010, 12:56 PM
There are a few ngons where I liked the flow better, but not many. It's mostly quads. The first minion was completely procedural, but on this one, I did the iris with a bitmap. I'm not good enough with procedurals to get something that cool looking. :)

When I thought of 'minion'...
I thought of Peter Lorre from 1940/50s films, so here he is...

I actually thought he played Igor in Frankensten..
Ive since found out that he didnt!
Closest he got to that, was maybe the hunchback, I still think of him as a minion/underling though...

(sorry Peter!)

Took Just over 90 mins to model and whole thing was done in 2 hrs.. (so im out the running for grand prize)

808 Polygons in total (became 12584 after sub-patch)

Nice model Kuzey, as always!
ianay, I know what you mean, I always think of Marty Feldman when I picture any of those characters now. Young Frankenstein is one of my favourite films. Those eyes stick in your mind, just like Lorre's.

Good topic Aurora, good to have you on board

Next challenge.....

Sorry guys I did not forget, its just been a normally crappy Thursday for me. I'm actually surprised that there was more then 1 entry and even more that I loved them all.

First Iain - This was what I was expecting to see and to be honest if I was to create myself as a Despicable Me minion it would have been your guy to the last pixel.

In the end though choose IgnusFast's zombie minion due to the creativity and unexpected coolness of the idea. CONGRATS!

Congrats to all actually and thanks for modeling. Now for me to find time to do more of these I enjoy it!!

Well done IgnusFast...I loved those two characters

Wow, thanks, guys! I hadn't done a challenge in forever, and just thought this one would be fun. I really appreciate the votes!

So, I haven't been paying attention - what do I do now? Do I adjudicate the Fresh Air challenge? Or come up with one after that? Or is my selection as winner all pomp and no circumstance? :)

Iain
07-16-2010, 12:23 PM
You come up with the next challenge and adjudicate that one.

Well done again
