Hello to all. I've been lurking around the Newtek forums ever since I've started using Lightwave, wich was about 2-3 months ago when I started an internship.

We just received a project offer where I have to render a tent which was done with SolidWorks. I've tried searching for a way to import a .stp file into lightwave but can't seem to find anything. The only info I found was a thread that went the other way .obj->.stp.
http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100487

Thanks in advance.

Lightwolf has a good one, he'll probably see this thread.

Import the .stp into Blender. Export the .stp from Blender as an .lwo. Import .lwo in to LightWave.

I took a closer look at those file extensions, and I may've lead you astray. Blender can import .stl and .slp, but I am unfamiliar with .stp and don't know if Blender can open them natively. Sorry.

I was pointed at it... but it's only STL, not STP (which is quite a different beast).

Cheers,
Mike

Talking about STL, the SHM STL tools are back up on the Chromecow page!
YAY!

Here is a link to Polytrans - its 3D CAD importer will handle .STP

Its not cheap, but is an option to look at.

I meant to post this a few days ago, seeing as there are a few people doing cad stuff here but I forgot. I found the link while looking around the Zbrush forums.

http://www.cadexchanger.com/index.html

It' s in beta and free to download.

From the website :

" Supported formats currently include IGES, STEP, ACIS-SAT, STL, VRML, X3D and BRep. However, this is only a beginning and more formats (including Parasolid XT, Rhino Open NURBS, JT, and others) are underway. "

You could do as Adam said, and convert it to something Blender can use then save the result as lwo. Is STEP the same as stp ?

In my experience it is next to impossible to "convert" an stp file as it is something akin to converting a midi into a live orchestra. stp is a Soild file format, while just about everything else is polygonal. Your best bet is to ask them for something you can use, like an stl. There's a nice plugin for Lightwave for that. Otherwise you can try Rhino, which will be able to save it out to something useful (even lwo). The demo is fully functional and free:

Thanks for all the help. Will try to use Rhino to save it out as lwo. If not, then I'll have to ask the client for a different version :P.
