Is there a smart way to animate several images mapped on geometry over time using the normal texture options?

I have five images 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg, 4.jpg, 5.jpg, starting with the first one I want to it mapped on to an object then as every 30 frames I want the next .jpg to replace the last one. basiclly i want to animate the mapping over time switching the mapped image over time.

You could add multiple layers and animate the opacity of each individual layer over time.

So if image 1 is supposed to be on at the start you could add a layer for image 2 over image 1. Set layer 2's opacity to 0% and then animate it up to 100%.

You could also turn your images into an actual image sequence but that means you have more images then your original 5.
