Hello Californians,

I'm going to be staying in L.A. for a while and I'm very curious if there are more places to go do some 3D Networking. Places similar to the Lightwave User Group meetings. . . or not lol. I know a few people in L.A. but I'm up for anything, even hang gliding from one party to the next. Other than the cool boating communities and the salmon fishing, as a 3D artist Wisconsin is not my style anymore. :)

You could visit Rob; doesn't his location say Burbank? :D

Maybe you can convince him to do a pub event. :)

uh? I donīt get it. I think thatīs quite a lot of LW!! Maya is supposedly the industry standard for FX. You should check the map around here, then you would really get depressed...

And many of those on the map are no longer in existence. But this is still a helpful resource. There's a lot of new ones that have cropped up too.

The best, most popular general user group I've found out here is DMALA (http://dmala.org/). It's has a large audience and is once-a-month and regularly has studios showing off their work, from film projects to television to commercials. The group is more motion-graphics oriented, but they include visual effects as well and a lot of borderline stuff (e.g. Pixel Liberation Front discussed their motion graphics for all the screens in Terminator Salvation). It's a really good group and they showcase participants' reels at the end of each meeting. They showed mine on my very first meeting and I got a call two days later from a major design house needing some VFX work. So definitely check that out.

Also sign up for The Gnomon School's email list. They regularly have gallery openings, studio events, and sometimes just meetings where a company will talk about the work they did for a film or show. They just had a workshop on Avatar that lasted the whole day and it was free. They also had one on the effects of Heroes and V where Zoic and Stargate presented.

Creative Cow always tracks a lot of industry events and meetings, especially having to do with filming and editing. Google around and talk to people. There's a lot of industry meet-ups.
