View Full Version : Geometry modelled around other geometry?

Does anyone have any techniques for making one piece of geometry follow the contours of another piece of geometry?

I have some models that need to lay snuggly around a ball-ish shaped object, while keeping the models overall shape (bit like a carpet on a very uneven floor). I've tired Spline guide but its limited to one direction at a time and using the bend/magnetic/rotate tools with falloff is too cumbersome and not very accurate.

Any suggestions?

Clone the ball object, enlarge just a tad, subdivide until you get the points you need and then push and pull the verts on your cloned ball until you get what your after. Might work.

Thanks Michael. I ended up having to remodel some pieces anyway so stencilled out the edges on a copy of the ball and used that as a basis to build a spline cage. The model was built out of that.

I can't think of another way of building meshes out of contoured surfaces that gives me a clean base to start from, especially if the thing I'm building needs to be suB-D'd!
