We are looking to upgrade our OS and were wondering what the best bet was. We are going to 64 bit on Windows machines, and it looks like the only supported OS listed for LW 9.6 is Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Is Windows 7 supported as well? Are there any performance differences that anyone can speak to?

Thanks for any assistance.

Go with Windows 7, it works fine and is Microsoft's current OS.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I think Windows 7 64 bit is what we'll go with. Now I need to argue for as much RAM as we can get.

I have some confusion regarding plugins, operating systems and applications with regards to 64bit operating systems. If anyone can clarify, Id appreciate it. We are going to move from a 32 to a 64 bit OS (Win7 64).

Is it correct that any 32bit application will run on a 64 bit OS?

Will 32bit applications generally run faster/slower/the same under a 64bit OS?

Is it correct that 32bit plugins will work properly on a 32 bit application running under a 64 bit OS?

Is it correct that 32bit plugins will not work on a 64 bit application running under a 64 bit OS?

Thanks for any assistance.

99% of the time, yes unless it's a really old application. I haven't experienced any issues so far and I jumped on board with XP x64 years ago.

They'll be slightly faster under Windows 7 because of it's better memory management but not noticably. 32bit apps will also have access to 4gb RAM under a 64bit OS rather than the 3gb limit of a 32bit OS so it will help a little with RAM intensive tasks.

Is it correct that 32bit plugins will work properly on a 32 bit application running under a 64 bit OS?

Is it correct that 32bit plugins will not work on a 64 bit application running under a 64 bit OS?

Correct on both accounts. LScripts work with either as far as I'm aware as they aren't compiled.
