Thought this might come very handy to everyone. Just read this at the Silo site.
MarkInTx, a windows developer, created a very useful utility. A work of a Genius!

QUOTE:
"Hey, I wrote a little utility that some guys might find useful. It's probably not as useful for Silo as some other apps... but, well, the price is right (It's free).
First off, know that it is WINDOWS ONLY. I take advantage of some low-level system calls to make it work.
It's pretty simple. It pops up a form that you can load an image into. You can zoom it and place it anywhere you want (ie over Silo).
When you hit the "Overlay" button, the screen goes into a pass-though mode, so you can model in Silo as though the screen is not there. You see the image, but it doesn't affect your Silo actions.
It has become a FOREGROUND reference image -- as opposed to a background image. It should work with any application: Silo, Blender, Sculptris, zBrush... anything.

There is a little video showing it in action here: Foreground Reference Utility (http://www.digitalartistguild.com/misc/UtilityExplain/UtilityExplain.html)

And you can get the Utility here: RAR File (http://www.digitalartistguild.com/misc/DAG_ForegroundUtility.rar)

Let me know what you think..."

I requested something like that for Layout ages ago...it would make camera matching so much easier. Instead, I use a sheet of acetate and a CD pen to draw reference lines based on the background image.

Parent a poly to your cam, add some transparency..done
Move, scale, key, add a sequence whatever.
So you can do this in layout with no probs.

like Skywatcher_NT says,

and if you forgot to parent it on frame 0 and moved the camera,
just go to frame -1, set the camera to 0,0,0 position, and parent it.

(though it this case i guess you can basically just add a textured poly and move around instead)

never-the-less, a nice little app :]

Not to forget, doing it in LW as you suggest also support animated references (for walkcycles etc).

Nontheless, it is a cool little app!

great. very good tool.
look at this for inspiration:
http://digitalcontentproducer.com/dcc/revfeat/video_tool_time_pixar/

if you add a little drawing function after a multi image you create a good tool for all animator.

All I have to say is that scary-monsters' Reference Image works quite nicely and is worth the small price tag.
