mac and windows. While i understand most of you might already have a means to output your finale video . But if you render out a large format this will re-encode to devices from a drop down list.
two flaws: doesn't support multiple cores. re-encodes one core.
doesn't support dvd format that you might have stored on a hard drive. that you own btw.

There's also some other free ones here:

and that website (Gizmo's) has tons of links/ratings to free software

Check out WinFF. It's the fastest and easiest to use in my experience.

Don't think it's open source, but is free. Been using it to convert my TiVo recordings to xvid.

Beat me to it.

I used to use that. Don't know if it's still the same but the old website seemed to try everything it could to make you think it was malware. There's even discussions out there of people being scared of it. Between Super and WinFF though, I've found WinFF to be more stable (for my needs).

I am quite happy with the Pavtube Video Converter. It does what I want & at a reasonable price(35USD). Mac users have big problems with all the video formats, but with Pavtube software I can convert every kind of video in a Mac compatible version. Very easy and complete variety of video formats.

Are you still after something to do that Steve? If it's any help, I've been using Vegas MS Pro now since last year, if you have any questions pop them here. To answer your one above though, it converts sequences of images (24 and 32bit (alpha)) into video, all the way up to 1080p :)
