I have a bunch of objects (can be one mesh item or individual ones) that i want to animate the rotation of using a texture, is there some way of doing this in layout ? Think placards at a stadium that get flipped in a certain pattern which is why i would like to drive it with an animated texture.

If im not getting your question wrong...:
DP_PartMove
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/dpont/plugins/nodes/nodes/VectorCast.html#PartMove

search the foruns, you will find neat stuff done with it.

I remember wanting to do this exact thing years ago and wasting 3 days trying to do it.
it is much much more possible now with nodes. try the part move thing. nodes are definitely the answer.

You can also do the same thing natively in LW as in this example using an endomorph driven by a texture.

It's hard to see on the example, but do they actually rotate or morph into a flip linearly like morphs like to do ?

They actually rotate without distorting. :)
