I recently been talking to a collegue of mine about creating realistic visual effects, as partening to movies such as surfs up and others of which the water was amazingly realistic. and other movies such as lord of the rings, fantastic four and more. but what our problem, was that we could not settle for the best 3D programming that most of these guys use, personnaly I use lightwave and a bit of 3Dmax compositing in After Effects. so far we have found that realflow seems to be making alot of fuss about effects, so to you my friends and distant collegues what is the best software for 3D visual effects and dynamics like water, fire, smoke, and so on

Yep, right now Houdini covers them all very nicely.
