I think it depends on if you want to capture "moving"/3d gfx (like a game) or UI stuff for something like a tutorial.

For the former Fraps is probably a good choice, for the latter Camtasia Studio or the free CamStudio and the likes are more suited.

Fraps seems to be the best personally for me to capture screen footage @60fps , generally i use 1 machine for capture and my offline to capture the audio then I sync it up with AE.

this is probably not the most productive method but i feel the audio / screen capture can cause frames to drop .

hypercam -

I would look at open source video capture software *there's load just to lazy to google 4 you :D , I gather your making a tut for your new pluggin .....

I guess you are on Windows (since you're mentioning Fraps), in case some Mac users strafe by this thread, I can tell that I currently use and highly recommend iShowU HD. Its wonderful, captures to h264 in realtime so there is no need to first do the capture, and then do the compression, just capture and upload (unless you want to do some editing first that is).

Personally I would recommend GameCam over Fraps.

One vote more for CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/blog/camstudio-25-beta-1-released). It's free and does the job well.
Make sure you check out the tut videos on google too.
