I'm wondering if it's better to apply hair to a "skull cap" just under the skin, or to have it grow directly from the skin, maybe based on a weight map or another image. I would normally use the skull cap method, but I also need to do eyebrows and beard stubble and I was afraid the beard area might not bend nicely. Thoughts?

Always preferable, as your FFX results will not be affected by tesselation changes of the mesh that way

I also split the skull cap into sections depending on where the parting is. This gives me more control when creating guides.

That's a good idea, this one is just stubble on a shaved head, but I will keep that in mind.
