Just finished this shot...

Video
http://www.vimeo.com/10913327

The whole gun is CG... The rear flip up sight and the scope is part of the footage.

Tracked the footage in Boujou

Hand keyed all internal parts and Shells

Modeled and rendered in Lightwave

Composited in After Effects

Took me a couple weeks to do including rendering. I'll be posting a shot break down in a couple of days.

Let me know what you think :D

Pretty cool. Nice work. You can see some of the shells through the gun in the last few rounds though.

Your hand is sliding a bit, but it took me a good 4-5 viewings to spot that.

Bravo! I had to read it a few times were you said the WHOLE gun was CG... I couldn't believe it!

can you do a M249 next ? :)
It would be great to have a website with lot of weapons seen like this to see how they work inside

Looking forward to it! Fantastic work, Tony. Any plans to put any kind of smoke in?

I am :D

I have been playing with fumefx and recently blender's new smoke fx...

my only problem with blender is getting a smooth transition between lightwave motion files.

Very convincing! Though, I'd expect to see some muzzle flash and/or propellant discharge.

That's a bang up job.

Nice stuff.

Unless you specifically wanted CG smoke, DetonationFilms.com has muzzle flashes and the like that may help to finish the compositing, as a thought.

I do have a lot of flimed smoke and muzzle flashes but I want the challenge of doing it all in CG...

I'm only going to add smoke and a little bit of carbon coming off the block.

A couple of reasons that i'm not going to add a muzzle flash...

1 - typicality you wouldn't see it during the day (depending on the brake you have on your rifle)

2 - the type of brake that is on the gun is a flash hider that reduces muzzle flash

here is a video clip of me shooting the same gun as used in the video

As you can see its a very simple comp. :D

Very cool.

Just to understand your workflow, what benefit did you get from rendering the shells on a separate pass?

I did that so I could adjust the color and play with the levels in post. I wasn't real happy with the shells out of lightwave and was an easy fix in after effects.

I still think I need to spend a little more time with them.
