View Full Version : Cloning objects to Points in layout

I'm pretty sure Ive done this before but just cant remember how.

OK...You create an object in Modeler (say a flat plane with multiple points i.e. grid pattern)

You take that to layout. Then load a second object (say a ball ).

Is there any way to then clone the ball shape using the point information from the dome object. (so that the balls are all in the grid shape)

I know you can do it with Particles (using object surface/vertices) through the FX Linker...But I want to add a deformation map (wave) to the object so that the balls all move all wavy like.

and as far as I can tell Linked particles do respond to deformation maps.

Sounds like a hd_Instance job to me?
That's the easy way to do it anyway.

Pointclone plus the spheres in modeler to the mesh.
Then in layout deform lowres mesh with waves(displ).
With Fx hardlink the balls will follow.
Don't forget to parent the balls layer to th lowres mesh.

Here's a little scene to play with.
I've scanned the base mesh wave as MDD once the displace wave was ok.

Thanks guys.

But cant afford HD_Instance at present and The Node Motion plugin is only PC (Mac based here)...Not sure if displacement info from the parent effects the clones anyway.

Skywatcher : Thanks for file definitely what I'm after but I need to have different instances of he object (so there's different coloured balls).

I found an old thread that deals with cloning an object to another's poly positions using powergons and the command line.

It at least means you can then go in and replace the clones with different objects. Unfortunately the Displacement info from the source or parent poly doesnt translate to the clones.

Oh well back to the drawing board.

it's working for placing Fryrender proxies!

Deform and freeze the original? Then clone to points?

making proxy for instancing object, go to Motion Options, Item Node Motion
