Hi everyone, I’m David Maldonado, and I am the newest member of the NewTek Marketing group. I will be handling the 3D marketing communication as NewTek’s 3D Marketing Specialist. In this role, I am the one responsible for showcasing all the great work being created in LightWave 3D which currently includes the feature films, "Avatar" and "Repo Men."

I am a LightWave 3D user and DAVE School graduate, having worked on projects such as “Anthro,” “Pest Control” and “Seawolf.” I've been working with people for over 20 years, and take pride in making them happy. A deep-seated passion for LightWave resulted in my small claim to fame, having worked as a stereoscopic artist on the feature film, "Battle for Terra." I love and admire all sorts of cinematic experiences, video games and music. In fact, my musical taste can best be described as... interesting (working long hours at two different record stores will do that to you).

My goal is to create a positive, high-energy relationship with the LightWave community and beyond - keeping you in the loop, informed and hungry for more. My door is open to you for comments and suggestions on how to make that happen.

Cheers,

David Maldonado

Excellent. I lot of the negative posts about LW and Core have asked for a more 'informative' approach from NT marketing and it sounds like you're in the driving seat.

I look forward to your input.

Welcome aboard David...yes, new blood is great

So, will you be making the Core demos and is that why we didn't get one in the last newsletter, you getting the new role and need time to get up to speed ?

Best of luck :beerchug:

Welcome, also. Lightwave can use your considerable contributions. Only thing that was odd, for me, was posting the announcement on April 1st. Initially I was prepared for being "Fooled" but it sounds "for real."

Haha....Jay has answered my question, but it would still be a good idea to have a public face to the Core demo videos...like William was the public face for the 8x...9x series.

If had to guess I would say Rob might be doing the videos eventually.

Great - Newtek has a very active and helpful forum community, sent some freebies our way (heh). Also do Lightwave3D demo reels and place them in the official Newtek youtube channel, so we can attract non-believers.

btw, we need nice looking Lightwave 3D Tshirts.. and baseball hats

Hey guys- Just wanted to thank you for such a great welcome. There's plenty to talk about- plenty to do... and I plan to be huge part of it. I represent a team of dedicated folks who truly care about their product and their user base, and I'm here to spread the much needed love and info to both sides.... it is definitely a two way street, though- the only way we can all be successful is by listening to each other.

I'm very optimistic about the future- as you guys should be. there's plenty of great things on the way- and they will all be revealed to you soon.

again.. let me reiterate the end of my previous post- feel free to offer any and all advice and suggestions - there's lots that needs to be said, and ideas to be heard.

Marketing Example:
I always admired how VFS manages its Marketing. Take a look at their site, and how they promote their students during and after they graduate. They keep track of them, and write their stories as they achieve success. I graduated in 2006, and they always ask what I have been up to. I have never been approached by LW, just their communities.

Promoting OLD/NEW
The current marketing seems to be targeted to individuals. However, the stories used are of companies, or old time users. It reads very nostalgic, and not fresh.

Users that recently attained success due to LightWave are not interviewed as much. With schools as Dave School taking away LightWave from their classes, it reads as: "These old time companies, and old time users, have attained success (but we don't know about new ones...shhhh!).

Since I started using LW, I found this point really disturbing. It gave me great anxiety to know that even if I was doing great work, I knew no one that made it big time into a company in recent years: the stories where always of the same old timers, or the same school.

I agree that a lot of respect should be given to the past, but if no respect is given to the present, there will be no respect for the future of LightWave.

I hope this makes sense:thumbsup::lwicon:

you welcome !

Shouldn't say this, but pls take a look to "cough cough" Luxology marketing/advertising strategy. They rock IMHO: good vids, continuative infos (even if not really fundamental every time)
But i think you and Rob can do wonders.

Videos and connection with users in forums are very important in this period.
It isn't easy because users in NT forums are quite "picky", but the more information you guys deliver, the best it is.
In the opposite case it ends up we have lots of speculation on forums, based on small hints.

Also pay great attention onto estimated dates for Lw or CORE releases.

BTW very happy to see Newtek is finally hiring great people for marketing purposes.

Great to have ya on board! Looking forward to all you have to offer!

One of my first suggestions is getting on board with the Keystone/Unity/LW stuff! If it all works well that's going to sell LW seats! "Newtek at GDC" What!? Newtek and Lightwave as a product to make games with Keystone and Unity! What!?

I know what you mean- my friend and I messed around with bringing LW stuff into Unity as a world-building exercise - in an effort to figure out new ways to express ourselves and our artwork. It was really fun, and it's something to look into- I'd love to see NewTek represented in full force at GDC.

Yes, and it can be set up in 10 minutes by using http://www.zazzle.com
If it is good enough for brands such as StarWars and Disney its good enough for LW

Btw, make it a community competition. Let the community provide cool LW imagery for cups and t-shirts.

This would be great. I would definitely use it here at the studio. If it is big enough, people will ask "what is that logo about". That will initiate the whole conversation. But only if the cup is big enough will it prompt the question.

funny thing is, before I got into CG work, I used to kinda look like that guy, only with a goatee... friends have told me they looked for me online and found his website and thought I was him- since I always wanted to play guitar.. (I even had one)

now.. hair's shorter, weight gained, contact lenses gone, I never learned how to play guitar..(but I LOVE GUITAR HERO 1 & 2).. jeez.. now i'm depressed. ;)
