View Full Version : Spikey edges after catmull

03-20-2010, 09:04 AM

Ive made a 2d image with the pen tool. Copied/pasted the image and used bridge. Made the whole into 1 poly.

Problem is when I try to add lines etc catmull doesnt do what I want. See pictures.

How to fix?

Knife seems to work though.

On occasion, pressing tab to turn off the subs is a good temporary fix for what might not be working with catmull.

check if you don't have duplicated vertex, or edges.

also make sure you merge all points... do a merge operation.

You also might need to reset all your edge strengths to 0. This has fixed many SubD issues I've run into.

I believe it's a limitation on CC subs at the moment. To avoid such things, toggle the CC subs to modify its edge weighs, when your model is complete and there would be no more cutting, extruding and merging will be done.

It is probably duplicate points as mentioned. I've run into that type of stuff quite often.

yes duplicate points, two point polys, or even a quad on the inside of the model using those points will give a wierd look to sub-d's

I use cc-subd's constantly (even when the final model won't have sub-d's) to test and check for errors in the geometry because you quickly see what is not getting rounded and know where the problems are.

the mere fact you can work directly in subpatch or CC, doesn't mean you have to do it the whole time. Considering how the cage mesh is layed out, is always welcome and helps you avoiding probs like this. :agree:
