to make them look more realistic you need to model them: headlights consist of various parts (cover lens, parabolic reflector, light bulb etc) if you model each and assign an appropriate surface you simply cannot go wrong.
Get loads of reference, as many images as you can for what you are modeling and study them before starting.
For modeling cars there'a great tutorial in pdf format on foundation3d by Lewis, an outstanding LightWave modeler. You might want to check that one out also. Good luck and keep up the good work.

definetly an improvement, but if your focusing on the headlight move the camera right close to it ! this is the actual thing

as you can see there is no orange part in there that can be seen, also you need to model all that stuff. Actually it doesn't look too bad at all, I've seen headlights that can be a real nightmare to model :)

Hi !

Sampei is right, if you want realistic lights you have to model everything inside of it or at least most of it (some things can be mapped if needed but best is to model).

Here is few screen grabs of some of my old models Lights so you can see how detailed they are.

hey Lewis those are perfect !
how do you reference them while modeling ? I have found that ebay can be great for getting pictures of isolated parts :)

I get or take myself close photos from real car so i end up with tons of hi-res reference images before starting ;).

It's very good improvement and looking better and better, now sort out surfaces and give them something to reflect so you can see proper results. Remember - Car without environment will look rubbish even in real world (if you for instance close it in a black room ;)) so drop it in some environment or cheat with reflections ;).

Anything you want will help as long as it gives car something to be reflected on lights/paint.... :)

For quick environments check out Blochi's great plugin called sIBL

you have too many shadows (turn of shadows for al but one light) and dull environment (try to lit scene with single with HDRI) but it's still improving every time you post so that's good :).
