To get joint compentation with just a standard bone/joint.
Duplicate the bone/joint say an elbow. Then rig it to rotate 50% of the original bone/joint. This will give you a joint that will maintain volume more than just two bones bending. This is what we do in Maya because there is no joint compensation.
