I know for a fact that this question has been asked before, because I went searching through previous posts :D, but some of the links are outdated now.

How do I get .mdl into a useable format, and how do I write it back out to .mdl?
3D Object Converter is not a possibility as I am not willing to pay a ton for a converter.
Specifically I am working with a friend to see if we can design our own plane and airport in FSX.

Why don't you try this and see if it works for you:

http://www.conitec.net/english/gstudio/litec.php

It's name is Lite-C and comes with a model editor(MED) with support for a few formats
including mdl. You can read more at the website. Hope this help you.

I downloaded and tried that software, but I don't think it writes the mdl in correct format. FSX didn't even recognize it.
I am currently trying to export the mdl out of blender (because it has an fsx plugin), but you have to install the fsx sdk sp2 for it to work. That service pack doesn't work with windows vista 64 :(
