Could anybody help me, I would like to give an object a glow similar to looking at a full moon through a thin layer of cloud, or even like a light sabre (toned down).
Help would be much appreciated.

How about using the glow function thats built into LW?
Theres also the bloom tool and the corona plugins...all part of LW :)

Or do it in post to reduce render times using something like After Effects. : )

1. select your planet/sphere surface and open the surface tab, itīs the
second tab called advanced where you set your surface to have a glow by
intensity.

2. you also need to enter the image processing tab and enable glow from
where you also control intensity and glow radius.

see sample images on a 1 meter sphere, planet shader from free simbiont
shaders.
you do have more control mostly thou using comp programs like after effects, but if itīs not available this is the way to go..

you can also use a second geometry and incidence gradients on transparency and luminosity channels, that is commonly used for atmospheres.
