Uk always get's 3D world about 3 or 4 weeks before the US.

Tobian made reference to this before, and I think he said he's done a video for 3DW. So I'm really looking forward to the issue. Not only is his knowledge of LW excellent, he passes it on... A true waver...

No, I fried someone else's computer :D

I did fry my windows by using a USB headset mic, which decided to destroy my sound card drivers every time I used it though haha :)

Not exactly sure what I can talk about yet, as I am not 100% sure of what I did is actually going to be in the magazine but yes, my poor computer didn't like having such large images, there's more than a few gigs worth of new data on my poor hard drive at the moment :D

I'll be able to talk about it more once the issue has gone to print, though I hadn't thought about the issue of overseas distribution :S But yes hopefully it will be some good Lightwave exposure, and I have showcased several cool plugins I use quite a lot, I think the only ones I didn't was Dpont nodes, but you can only cover so much! :D

not sure if I would sell Pluto Station, but either way, I think I'll still have to finish it, and there's quite a bit left to do, as you will soon no doubt see :D

Looks like I'll be buying 3dWorld for the first time in ages then!
(Not sure where though with Borders going the way of every good company lately.)

Congratulations Tobian-look forward to seeing what goes in

Great news

The last 3DW issue didn't have much LW or modo AFAIR, great to make the cover!

Keep it up ..

Yeah the magazine seems a lot more friendly to Lightwave at the moment, which is only a good thing! :)

Yeah, I am finding it hard to get myself, but a reasonably large WHSmith should stock it, it's where I found mine.

I hope there's something in it you guys can learn from :)

Yeah it's kind of a niche now, and not as many people buy print media nowadays. hope you can find a copy, I don't think I can mail everyone :D

Totally Amazing... Ya. ...

LOL no, and they actually contacted me via PM on this forum so it's not like there was any confusion.. and strictly speaking, the Bugatti Veyron was made in LW, by Craig A Clark, not that you'd know LOL.

Tobian
02-22-2010, 10:16 PM
Hopefully I can showcase that LW is capable of some high end rendering and effects that aren't done in Mental Ray or Vray :) Shame I didn't have more time to work on my model for the cover art, as it's taking FOR EVER to do hahaha :) Back to my more sedentary pace again now PHEW, it's been a hectic few months!

Hey Congrats Tobian!

I just saw this thread but had been following your Pluto Station thread on SpinQuad regularly.

I can't wait to see the issue. Keep it up!

Tobian, can you tell us if there will be any high res renders on an included dvd with the magazine? And not sure if you can say, but are they going to have an article with you talking about the creation of the station? or is it just pics? Well deserved BTW too!

Tobian
02-24-2010, 08:42 AM
Hmm I doubt that there will be any included no, just the one's in print. Depends what they do with the ones I sent for the cover and such :)

Pluto Station takes up nine pages in the latest issue and has some great tips and advice in it. And if you're interested, the front cover looks a bit like this...

Heh - it's all good. We could have gone bigger, but we did have a few other topics to cover as well! (Oh by the way, LW users also get a nice 10-minute tutorial on short depth-of-field macro shot using a beautifully detailed ant model as sold for $98!).

Okay, shameless plug over. Normal forum service has been resumed.

Probably not much but I think folks are gonna want to know how you've managed it... good going T:)

Tobian
02-28-2010, 06:37 PM
Mostly, it's just from a lot of patience :D I hope I can explain some of it in the article! :D Cheers guys!

And yeah KillMe, it was quite tricky to get it how I wanted in the limited time I had to me.. normally I have the luxury of dozens of tests to get it just right, but not this time! :D

Hmm that's a shame, my local WHSmith seemed to have several copies of last months, so assuming all my mates don't get there before me, I shouldn't have a problem getting one myself haha:) I may even get back to doing actual modelling again soon! :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the issue with your work on the cover isn't out yet, I'm afraid. Isn't it supposed to be out on the 10th of March?

Here in Barcelona 3DWorld usually arrives a week or two after the release date in UK if I'm not mistaken (it's not that I rush to the newsagent to get my copy, so I'm guessing here.)

No it's not out yet, it will be out from the 10th or March, depending on where you live.

I think John Menzies was absorbed by WHsmith, because I can remember both of them going back to my childhood :)

Hi Tobian,

They are sending you a few free copies, right?
If not, be sure to request some, it's the least they can do!

The Tutorial of this Magazine is Online - Models are only on DVD in Magazine

http://www.3dworldmag.com/128

Build a space station with :lwicon:
I' have watch - it looks nice - but the final Render with GR not very realistic like Comic Style.

I think the materials are to bad?

Tobian
03-07-2010, 06:07 PM
Well by all means, get the magazine, which includes the assets, tweak the materials, and post up your renders here for comparison :) I'm always happy to have feedback and tips!

I get this magazine in 4 weeks first....

The Video Tutorial is great, but I'm not an GR Shader expert :hey: - not sure if it is possible only with Surface Nodes it looks unnatural clean, i think real Textures and a Dirty Pass are needed to get more Realistic look - i try it :o

Good luck. See you in a month!

Tobian
03-08-2010, 05:24 PM
Hehe, well it is the computer core, so I should think it's clean in there :D But by all means play with the model once you have it, and put as much dirt in there as you want... If you follow my explanations it wouldn't really take much effort to create a dirtier version of the material, and add further texturing elements, like scratches and marks, just mix up your shaders with the one's present.. just about anything is possible in nodes, and feel free to ask for help :)

Tobian
03-08-2010, 06:00 PM
Yeah well by all means create a custom set of awesome brushed metal anisotropic materials, multilayered BSDF shaders, with hand-painted details and textures, and send them to me, so I don't have to :p

mikala
03-08-2010, 06:02 PM
How about a middlin' set of brushed metal materials?
Still have not received my copy in the mail yet!

Tobian
03-08-2010, 06:09 PM
Well the main material there is a shiny white plastic, so it's not metal, but yeah, could be good.. that said none of the model is UV mapped, so it could be difficult to do, unless you use my cubic mapping tricks.. I just haven't yet made some nice repeating dirt and grime textures myself :)

and yeah it may take some time to get all the way out there!

mikala

Gritnode (http://katastro.fi/~eetu/gritnode/) might help to add dirt/rust easily :)

True, but only in association with cleverly designed other textures, otherwise it's not much more than a fat ambient occlusion node :)

I'am working on a non-commercial B-Movie a SiFi-Film at the moment, so the feature is very interesting for me :)

I have bookmark this older short making of LW Pictures:

and the final shot:

Tobian
03-09-2010, 11:36 AM
Very nice work. Yeah the textures are really nice, though I think it could benefit from linear workflows. Your detail work is fantastic, but then I only had about 2 weeks to put that together! :) I had a lot more ideas about stuff I wanted in there, such as the computer cores, through the right doors, and giving much more detail to the coridoor set, and equipping closable doors on the corridors and core area, so you could pose it, but it would have all been a lot of work. I will get round to doing all that, but for my own purposes :D

Here's a more polished version of it, and I am quite aware it needs a lot more stuff in there, and could use some little details here and there to really sell it, I'm quite happy with the shaders though!
