i think that when you view your subpatch model in layout using the
textured shaded solid wireframe display it would be nice if i could
see my base mesh wireframe(like in modeler) instead of all the newly created mesh from the subpatch.

i know the current way is good for some stuff but if im tryn to get
deformations right on a model its good if i can still reference my
base mesh while its still subpatched.

maybe some type of additive overlay

Yeps its a good request: That you can choose to see the wireframe by final result or smooth cage.

But if it's bothering you and you want to "solve it" for now, here are 2 possible workarounds:

-Texture Map(left head), using a quad map like in this William's video (ftp://ftp.newtek.com/multimedia/movies/w3dw/PolyTrim.mov) and a texture like the one in the zip file attachment, so you can see it in OpenGL.

-2-Point-Poly-Chain cage (middle and right head), It's basicly a frozen model and only the subD cage is left behind with "Unweld Along UV" and FiberFx Strand Maker.

The texture is a easier one, and it will stick to the poly no mater what weightmaps you have on it, thought it looks worse =P Both have ways to show up in OpenGL but ont in render time, has yu can see inthe attached scene file.

Cheers
