What exactly is this and what is its function. Have read users guide and just cannot figure out and its killing me :)

Actually, Jeff, in SE terminology, you're confusing "splines", "Nodes" and "Influences".

A spline is sometimes called an envelope, but regardless in this context it's essentially just the line (or curve) that defines the value of a specific variable (on the Y axis) over time (the X axis). When you put an X in the box beside a parameter in the Control Tree, the spline associated for that item is made visible in the "Splines" panel, which is really a graph.

In SE, "nodes" mark keyframes - points on the spline where fixed values are established. The value varies between two (non-equal) keyframes over time.

An "Influence"can be set between nodes (keyframes) and will 'influence' the shape of the curve between keyframes, not unlike the way you can move 'handles' at control points in vector drawing programs.

yep, i was thinking nodes and influences. time to get some rest!

MHS - Did these guys help you figure this out?

Or have you already killed yourself?

The manual tells you how to turn nodes into influences and vice/versa.
