Please help with some basic questions which are confounding me:

1) What's the best format to record to in VT to preserve best quality when hd space is no objection? Is it the native .rtv format?

2) Does VT5 still require an external program like Tmpgenc to encode to mpeg or HDV? If not, is there still any advantage to use Tmpgenc to get the best result?

Thank you/

I would go with RTV.

You can use SpeedEDIT-VT to both render to HDV and capture from or send back to the camera.

You can also use SpeedEDIT-VT to create MPEG2 for DVD, although it is slow and the quality may not be as good as tmpg for example.

VT5 owners are also eligible for SpeedEDIT2 upgrades.

SE2 will render MPEG2 with AC3 audio very fast and the quality is very good.

Depending on the speed of your system it can take far less than play time.
