View Full Version : Any non 3-channel RAM users here?

I just learned the sad news about the matching of 3 RAM channels in Mac Pros for optimal performance...and that, if I add 2 2-GB sticks into my remaining slots to boost my RAM from the Factory-installed 6GB to 8GB total, that I might see a performance hit.

I am not able/willing to sell a kidney to outfit myself with 6 2-gig sticks or better...

Has anyone here added to their 4th RAM slots and can you tell whether you got a speed hit? If so, is it significant?

I'd think "significant" would be anything above a couple of percent...something that would really add up over days' worth of renderings..

thanks for any info.

I have Mac Pro (Quad) (March 2009 model, if I remember right) and currently have 2 gig modules in 4 slots making 8 gigs of RAM. And yep, I uninstalled the factory RAM and it's currently sitting idle in my shelf.. I know the feeling, friend..
I was wondering exactly the same thing - why Apple added the fourth slot while the system is optimized for 3-channels.
For me I have noticed no speed hit whatsoever. I noticed increase in speed after I upgraded from 6 gigs to 8, thus adding module to the fourth slot. Especially while dealing with uncompressed 1080p video in After Effects, it does makes some difference.
I believe the speed hit you mention happens only in certain situations. I haven't noticed that in rendering, so I think in my opinion, having the extra ram is worth of it.

Good to know that...sounds like the work you do is very similar to mine...

As for that 'only in certain situations' thing, I pressed an Apple product specialist on that...IOW, which situations??

The language I've seen is so nebulous and non-specific as to be meaningless...

So, I said to him, you know, I do 3D rendering and that really takes the juice, compared to almost any other application I can think of...what do you have to be doing, Astrophysics?? Real-Time Terra Forming?

He chucked and said, still, that he had no specifics as to which situation would make the non-3-channel RAM apparent...

Oh, well....I'll prbly re-think the RAM addition based on your comment...

thank you

No.

But I get any ram for my Macs from my PC supplier. He doesn’t sell Macs. I’ve never had any problems. The last one I did was the Mac Mini, I bought the bottom of the range, opened it up removed the 1 gb & replaced it with 4 gb & while I was at it swapped the crummy HD for a Black Scorpio.

It was a piece of cake! All worked well & saved a bucket load of money. If you look up the tech specs on the ram from the manufactures. You can tell your PC supplier which ram sticks to get it they can’t work it out for themselves.

There isn’t any mystical secret formula that requires you to purchase ram through Apple, although they would like you to think so!.

You do not need to buy your ram via Apple. & certainly not at their inflated prices.

I think it's always worthy to note that you should hold onto your Apple Factory RAM in case your system needs to go in for warranty service. Apple WILL point blame at any claim of hardware problem to "non" Apple RAM if it is installed, and will ignore problems until they see "their" RAM in said system. I have no love for the Idiot Bar. :D

Nor do I...many unhappy hours spent at their "mercy."

their function I am convinced is to get rid of you by searching for any weakness in your case which they can exploit.

I love the fact that the so called "genius" bar guys literally repeat every single thing I've already done when I bring in a system...very annoying. I generally try to set up a meeting with the business agent so I can bypass the goofs at the bar.
