Speed Modeling Challenge #72 Our Last Best Hope...
*************************************************
Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.
3. LightWave should be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

**Please mention whether or not you would be happy to share the model.**

This week's topic: Babylon 5

Anything remotely related to that wonderful show which probably fired more forays into CG than anything else in recent years!

I'm giving 90 mins for this in case anyone fancies getting adventurous.

Ships, props, sets, planets. :)

Time Limit - 90 minutes.

Deadline - Wednesday 3rd of Feb. 2010 - 2200 hrs GMT

There may be a few references online.

Probably not as many references if you wanted to model a breast, but almost as many.

Ughh, this is gonna be hard. I think I may have seen an episode or two, but that was years ago. I found a site called www.babylon5props.com though. Not a whole lot on it, but I imagine there are more like these...

I've been lazy lately. I should try one entry a day, since it's one of my favorite subjects.

Good start, oobievision! I guess you started with too much attention to detail. That's the beauty of these challenges. They teach you some of the trade-offs you have to make to meet a deadline, and improve your predictive ability.

I've always had difficulty guessing how long a project would take. I think I'm better at it now.

Totally forgot I have the B5 'Security Manual' and some small ship models that came out a ways back. (lousy for detail though :p ).

Nangleator

This would be a good challenge for archviz people, too. Lots of cool corridor and room possibilities.

Mars base exteriors could be fun and simple...

Shadow ships have Magic Bevel written all over them...

So many ideas!

Dang I wanted to start on this weeks challenge, but know nothing about B5, so I'll wait till next week.

Enjoy,

It could be :D

Babylon 5 was one of the first TV shows to use CGI effects to such an extent and the 3D work was Lightwave stuff.
For its time it was spectacular.

Twisted_Pixel

I know we have 90mins this week, but my head is fried so here's mine at 60mins. Will see what I can add tomorrow night.

Impressed myself I was actually able to get the likeness. First 'organic' thing that has gone reasonably well for me.

This whole being single lark has its perks, so much more Lightwave time now :)

Also included my reference image.

"In Valen's name, John! Look at the poly flow! Poles are everywhere! What have we done?"

36 minutes modeling. It's a bit of a cheat, since I couldn't really visualize it from the reference material. There are some legs missing, and a couple are a bit bent.

Lens flare strong enough?

I'll do something a bit more complex next time.

aaaah Babylon 5. Yes. Lightwave written all over it. Hmmm. hard to pick something which hasn't been modeled before.

If you haven't seen or heard from Babylon 5 then you must be ... well the show started in 1993 and ended in 1998 so you probably where too young or you had other interests back then.

I also found some old material.
Built me de docking bay as per an old object of the B5 station I had.
Of course, it was easier as I had the object so I could more easily recreate all the parts. Stopped at around 1 hour and started texturing (which was also a bit easier as I had the textures ;). Nevertheless.. built from scratch.

Here goes:

Nangleator

Severed Dreams is a fantastic writing and editing lesson. No fat in that script. Every scene is the perfect length, every plot point is delivered with efficiency. So damned much happens in the episode.

Probably my favorite episode, with a possible exception of the last one, which still wrecks me when I watch it.

colkai
01-28-2010, 02:21 AM
To be honest, although the contest is officially over, I'm inclined to keep posting here and do a better texture on my model and do some others. Simply because it's B5 :)

Dunno what others think, should we have this as a 'B5 models' thread? Would anybody contribute? (don't mean you have to share the models themselves, just put up B5 stuff).

I know with the challenges, it's too easy for "life" to stop you doing what you want, I had plans myself this week but they were well scuppered. :p

So if anyone thinks 'YAY' for a B5 thread, post a reply here, (I'm all for it myself of course). :D

Meantime, I'll have a ponder and put up the official winner today. :)

Nope, deadline is 1 week each time, though with the slackening off in entries, no doubt due to folks having "life" interfering with "fun" (unfair! :jester:), maybe we give it a two week run in future?

Anyhoo, I for one will be posting a couple more renders here, it's up to folks if they want to do "proper" models or still try and stick to the challenge time limits for fun / self-challenging.

So, that's two of us, any more? :D

EDIT: Oh, btw, I have quite a few minature models, if folks are interested, I can try to get some macro shots of them for modelling. I'll grab a couple of 'generic' shots over the next couple of days to show what's available. :)

I dunno if I'll get time, butI am going to see if I can do a maint. bot to go with me cargopod.
I've given up on the texturing, I'm rubbish at PShop and UV's :p
3D-Coat is supposed to be good for that, but all the painting examples I've seen are organic and I can't seem to find a way to make hard edged brushed in 3DC to paint directly on the mesh. (If anyone knows how to do this, do tell!).

Net result, crappy textures on me cargopod will have to stay. :jester:

If I get chance over the next 24 hours, will tackle the maint bot. again, likely untextured though.

It's gosh durn amazing to think they did a lot of the stuff on Amigas and PC's running LW 4.0 and below.
One can only imagine how it could be done with LW9.6 and the latest PC's. :D

Richard, Whitestar, ye mad man, mad I tells ya! ;) :)
They did some spectacular work with the tools they had. What they could do today would be a sight worth seeing.

Well, I ended up running over on this and haven't textured it, but wanted to share.
Will put the model up over the next couple of days.

A Raider Fighter. You can see where the wings went a bit screwy on it.

Ok, it is Thursday, I've checked. :p (in joke ;) )

I am going to take a "proper" look tonight to decide the winner because this is going to be a toughie. Some stunning entries so I'll apologise now for the fact I can't award multiple winners! :D

As regards the next and future challenges, does anyone think it would be a good idea to have them run for 14 days as this (accidentally) did?

Anyhoo, as I say, shall post up the winner tonight, I don't envy myself the task.

None of mine are eligible for the win anyway(either over the time or unfinished or no renders) that should give you a few less for the judging:D

14 days works for me. That way I don't feel pressure on those weeks when life gets in the way of LightWave.

I added an extra week clause at the end...if people like the idea :D

In which case, consider yaself achieving an "honourable mention" good sir! :)

You can't get off that easy....renders don't count in the judging...I do believe..hehe.

Ah but they are a part of the rules :D
"2. Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe."

Kuzey
02-04-2010, 08:07 AM
Haha...rules are made for breaking and that was just there as a guideline only type of thing...unless...I totally missed something :hey:

If there is ever a totally obvious winner and they don't post a render, I think it would be harsh for them not to win.

The render is so that we can see the full impact of the model but sometimes it's really not necessary (when using Art's great plug in for a wireframe for example.)

It's hard to be strict about rules when there's no prizes and we are all so relaxed anyway.

Yeah, we're all easy going here, plus, a good render is only gravy, (though I do so love seeing them :) ).

I don't think we should be hung up on wires being posted later if requested, we are a trustworthy bunch. :D

Sometimes, even without the wire, a model just looks good, which as they say, is all that counts. I think looking for the most complex and detailed model isn't the aim anyway, which is a good job or I never woulda won a challenge! ;) :p

Ok,
Eek a frikkin' beak! This was not an easy choice.

Kuzeys Kosh, nice, very brave to tackle that. The headpiece itself was really close to the show.
PPg gun - excellent, even if you didn't get to finish it.

Novawave - great concept, I can almost see B5 cartoons there.

chco2 - Based off an existing model or not, sweet.

Nangleator - Considering you did the shadow ship from memory, it's good enough for all but a purist, no denying what it is.
Loved the Corps badge as well, I would of chickened out and avoided subs myself. :p

Mr Feeney, I thought you said you had no contenders? Did you forget about your B5 station? ;) Mad skills as always.

Crossfire - No challenge would of been complete without the logo. :)

In the end, I have to go with a model I have not yet mentioned.

...

...

(hey - suspenseful pause always works in the TV shows :jester: )

...

...

(Ok, are you getting bored now? :p)

TA-DA!
The winner is Kuzey for his bad-ash Minbari Troligan "a-la-Kuzey"
Sure, it ain't "canon" but it's just so gosh durn cool!

Insane effort and a well worthy win IMHO, (well, obviously as I chose it as the winner DUHHH!) :D :D

Heh, in my school, it was a blackboard duster across the head, thrown from the front of the class. :jester:
(Can you imagine what the PC brigade would do if that happened now? :p)
