Speed Modeling Challenge #65- My Home Is My Castle
--------------------------------------------------------------------

*************************************************
Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.
3. LightWave should be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

**Please mention whether or not you would be happy to share the model.**

About 60 minutes...a cross between a knight and a centurion. Could go either way...but I'm not too sure atm :D

Glad you found these, spotted your other thread earlier and was going to suggest these as a good source of practice.

Now if only I could practice what I preach ><

Hey thanks, love your design, how long did it take to create the textures and lighting?

Iain
11-24-2009, 04:20 AM
Textures took about 15 minutes (just some photos cubically mapped.)
Lighting took 5-10 minutes(2 area lights and radiosity) and render took about 35 at 1400x1600.

Iain: 15 minutes and max 10 minutes for lighting? Could you please make a tutorial about your texturing skills one day? I'm always struggling with that and I'm sure there are others.

Cobra whenever i look at your avatar pic i think of the ghosbusters trap :)

A texturing tutorial from me would be a laugh!
I still use layers and just slapped some stock jpegs onto this model. Most of it doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny.

I think the secret is just using the right images and then getting everything else-the modelling, lighting and composition right.

I had been looking forward to this challenge for a while but the weather here is making it rather difficult to work, the power keeps flickering with the stormy wind and lightning.
This is all I got done.

Hehe, well, it is an avatar made during CORE's initial period. Almost every HC member has made one back then.

Iain: A laugh? Look at your own render quality, that's really not to laugh about. You always seem to find the correct lighting and surface settings. What's your secret?

Observation, probably.
If I want something to look a certain way, I'll look at other examples.

For this, I was copying a photo so it was quite easy.

As we slip beneath the flood waters here in Galway I thought I would do a sand castle.
Not one of my better works.

Actually did a render this time! Didn't turn out like I had hoped. Although it did turn out a lot better than other render attempts.

Modeling the torch and everything took ~50min. Setting up the scene took an embarrassingly longer amount of time.

Hey,

I've attempted to do a complete castle. Unfortunately, I'm slightly over the hour already with this and I still have to make the center part, a well, windows, doors, ... I planning to continue this model some further. So, it doesn't count for the challenge anymore.

As always, C&C welcome on how to progress further.

Greetings,
Sigurd

Heh, we are all thinking similarly :p
Going to take my bash tonight, got stuff to do so I will *have* to get it done in under an hour hehe.. ;)

not much time lately for any of the challenges but some nice entries here!

...and I'll jump on the hating Iain bandwagon!!! ;)
(personally I just think he posted the reference picture as his render)

Updated my torch render with new fire and a different light setup. Got the fire in another thread from Shrox so thanks to him for that.

Got to properly texture this now, since I rendered it, I took another minute to throw some flared bases on the larger columns.

I know the smaller columns are smoothed but that's just because it's a single 'occlusion' surface, won't look like that in the end.

Took all but 60 minutes, around 58 actually, but hey, close enough that I'd say the full hour. :)

Sadly didn't have time to add windows, but at least I got some archways in for the walkways and a portcullis. :D

All things being equal, I'll have a textured render up before the deadline tonight.

Managed to get some texturing done :)
Decided to put the wall texture on all towers and am re-rendering now, but wanted to get this up before 10:00pm!

EDIT: ..oh, render done! :)
Oops ...forgot the wires! :p

Hey All,

I know it's too late, but I wanted to add a render of my unfinished castle. I have problems finding a good grass-alike texture. Any1 has one to share with me?

I'll add details to this object and see where it will take me :)

Greetings,
Sigurd

Nice work you guys! Sorry I couldn't join, was a bit busy last week.
Grabbed a peek at the created models and wanted to find out what the next challenge was, but I have to be a bit more patient :)

This is another interior I did as well as an update of my previous render......
