I really hate Hello Kitty, yet I am awed by how pervasive it has become.

What is it with Hello Kitty? Is there a Japanese version of Ghostbusters where a giant Hello Kitty comes to destroy the world?

Is it public domain? Or just the best-funded marketing department ever?

Is it public domain? Or just the best-funded marketing department ever?More of a cultural thing that's been super commercialized. Owned by Sanrio. And it's her 35th birthday and constant reminders on TV and in shopping malls grows a bit thin. A few years ago there was a Hello Kitty package for one of the cars here. Full interior. There's this chick I've seen cruise around down town with a moped that's Hello Kittie'd out with matching helmet.

I think this was at the large temple in Nara.

Never heard of or seen it, maybe all the kangaroos, ferrel cats and dingoes around here fended it off?

reminds me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Bruna

On the other hand, keep this cat stuff up and you'll end up with a catty Opera singer who can't sing (ouch) and may the ancient Egyptian cat gods help you there man!:)

I used to work at a post house right across the Nijntje (Miffy i believe in english?) statue in Utrecht.
I always thought Kitty looked a lot like Bruna's style. I believe Bruna uses colored paper cut outs rather than coloring in line art.
