So I just went out and bought myself a brand new Mac Pro 8 Core... 12 GB RAM...

I loaded up LW all excited to see a blazing render time... only to find minimal if any improvement over my last Mac Pro that was 2 years old.

I am running Snow Leopard...

Is there a way to make it optimized for multi-processors?

I am running LW 9.6 (Mac32)

Thanks

What are the specs on your scene? Did you make any changes to it?

Depending on what you had & what you bought???

If you already had some 3.2 Ghz CPUs, then bought the new 2.26 CPUs it would be a waste of money. You would really need to buy some W5590s, which Apple doesn’t use.

Whether its an Apple or PC the CPUs will render roughly the same length of time. The Apple maybe a touch slower, but there is not a lot in it.

But don’t despair, you have a stack more network rendering which is very worthwhile.

By 8 core do you mean a single i7/Xeon chip with multi-threading or a dual-quad core machine with two Xeons? If it's the former JonW is right, you won't notice a lot of improvement...the advantage is that you can get the same speeds from a single CPU as the previous dual-CPU setups.

Things that will help - use 64bit Lightwave (if available) and ensure that multi-threading is set to 8 in Lightwave.

or set to 16 threads if you bought the 2 cpu mac pro
