I notice that third parties are offering additional procedural textures for Lightwave. Is it possible to create those myself? If so, how does one go about it? I think anything involving fractal mathematics would be beyond me, but otherwise...

Never mind. Found the SDK. Is it documented anywhere what portion of the software deals with procedural textures? Not finding much on first perusal.

And there is no utility to do it from a UI?

And there is no utility to do it from a UI?

It's programming- you have to write in text editor shader, procedural texture or node in some C/C++ compiler like MS Visual Express 2008. See LWSDK's index.html, Classes, then click on one of NodeHandler, ShaderHandler or ProceduralTextureHandler.

If you want to build your own node as user, you can get TrueGroup
http://www.trueart.pl/?URIType=Directory&URI=Products/Plug-Ins/TrueGroup
And make your own material, shader or node in Node Editor, connecting existing nodes..
