Speed Modeling Challenge #60 - Pirates

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

************************************************** *******
Rules:
1: Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.

2: Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.

3: LightWave should be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.

4: You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.

5: Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

**Please mention whether or not you would be happy to share the model.**

Nice topic. Been watching you guys and your progress for a while now.
Got an idea for this one, so I might actually get a chance to dip into it this week. Though I'm far behind all in terms of ability yet.

R. Feeny, nice, exactly what I was hoping to do...

Did you base yourself on this link (http://piratesofamerica.com/Pirates_of_America/More_Pirate_Weapons_files/Cannon%201.png) by any chance?

This one didn't work out so well for me and I abandoned it unfinished.

Go for it, a lot of the folks posting in these challenges have had a lot of practice but we all start off feeling that way :)

That came out great, Iain! Love the texturing - and of course the models.

Here's mine. 60min on the modeling... I'm not really happy with the render or textures so I might re-visit the scene setup later. :) I was playing with the 'grit' node on the mugs for too long and ended up just getting frustrated.

Don't worry too much about it. I see it as an opportunity to try something new and different, while sharping your skills :D

Have fun and everything else will fall into place

Nice work Jeffry.

I think you could make a cracking render from that if you worked on the beer texture (no pressure he he)

Great stuff Jeffry:thumbsup:
I think an environment for the beer to reflect would help.

And one more
A Tropical Island Beach palm tree, I did have a treasure chest half in the sand but it just didn't look right.

Thanks guys... I'm going to try to work more on this either this weekend or possibly Monday. There actually is an env. map right now but the way the whole scene is set up it's not really showing up. I need to really re-do a lot of the textures and scene setup. I can try to add some beer foam to help the texturing a bit too. Thx for the suggestions. :)

That palm tree came out great. Love the water. :) I think you need to add a jug of rum at the bottom of the tree!

Hehe...I stopped at about the 25 minutes mark. My 3d mojo hit a wall and I had no idea what to do next, I liked the handle but not much else.

Anyway, I uploaded the file for you guys to play with :hey:

Finally got the entry finished.
Spent the full hour working on the model, mainly due to having to tidy the mess from booleans. I'm sure there are much faster ways to achieve what I produced, but need more practice and investigation in to that.

Spent atleast three hours on setting up the scene.

Wires and Final render ("Pieces of Eight") included.
Will happily upload the model if anyone is actually interested.

The speed modelling part was Captain Stripe, which was pretty much the hour. The next day was texturing it, and the ship is something else I'm working on in my spare time. The rig was one I've been working on for a male human figure, which I fitted to the Badger in a few minutes using my handy dandy UpdateBones plugin (plug plug). The fur is FFX.

Remember my tin toy marching band I did awhile back. Well, meet their enemy...the tin pirates :D

Well not yet...but it could be the beginning of a new set of character toys...hehe.

65 minutes to block it in.

Captain Jack's hat.

About 20 minutes for the hat and a ridiculous amount of time on the lame head to stick it on :)

Ok...time to judge.

If I had my way it would be a tie between the dagger scene and Captain Stripe. Let me think...let me think....I think I'll go with.....

The winner is Dodgy....by a nose :hey:

Great work everyone...brilliant stuff :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Cool, that's very kind. Does this mean I have to pick the next topic? And when should I pick it?Not this week's topic but next week's. It can be posted as soon as this week's contest ends next Wednesday but sometimes they have not been posted until late Thursday and sometimes before the previous one ended, so don't get stressed about posting right on time.
