Doesn't the knife tool work in symmetry mode??

Nope! Since it is a polygon editing tool and will change the order your points are treated by LW you cannot use it on both sides of the model. You have to understand that you are not working with instances or references when mirroring. LW will always create "real" polygons and points.

While that makes sense, doesn't smooth shift also change point order? And yet it works in symmetry mode. Looks more like an oversight than a core infrastructure deal.

Cut in half (if possible), do cuts on half and mirror back...

I could see a use for the knife working in symmetry mode...

Good point, jamesl. Never really gave much thought to that. Still, there could be an explanation. Smooth shift works on polygons that will always exist on both halves. With the knife tool you cannot be sure of that, since you could cut in any direction.
