Does anyone know of a plug-in available for Lightwave that will unwrap geometry accurately and lay it flat. I know there are UV unwrap plug-ins but they distort the geometry to fit into the UV square. I'm trying to unwrap the planks of a boat hull so I will have an accurate image of what the planks look like when laid flat. I've once before wanted to unwrap a fabric object so I could figure out what the patterns for the garment would look like. Anyone know of anything like this?

You could try Blender's uv unwrapping - I loaded a ship model into Blender, set the seams on the hull, selected each part of the outer hull (starboard and port), switched the view to bottom view, and used the smart projection method (settings: init from view, high angle limit). To reduce the distortion, I mapped the uv's to an image size proportional in size to the hull. Worked well, with hardly any distortion.

Though I am guessing you could do the same in Lightwave - I just prefer Blender's uv mapping.

It doesn't sound like you want UV unwrapping but you want the polygons to be laid out flat. I thnk FormZ used to do this but I have not used it in a while. Worth a look though. I'm guessing you've checked on flay.com?

If it's a simple model you want to lay flat on paper, Pepakura is the answer:
