can anyone tell me how to set up a tube that just glows in a room.
do I add a couple of point lights inside the tube and make it transparent?

well admitting I understood well your request…

There are 2 things you should have in mind :
- the fact the tube itself glows (mean the surface of the tube has luminosity)
- the fact it lights the room

For first point just increase the luminosity of your tube, and possibly decrease its diffuse (will have a more flat looking though).

For the second you'd rather put inside the tube a linear light than several
point lights - simplier and faster -. The light's axis should be of course aligned
with the tube's one. And don't forget that you may change the light's scale
so that it has exactly the same height than your tube.

If the surface of your tube is single-side I think the light should go through it
(well I'm not sure I don't remeber). If not exclude the tube from the light (light properties panel). Of course this only if your tube is not transparent.

Also for the 1st point (luminosity of the tube itslef) you can set its surface
some translucency instead of luminosity, its should thus have a glow in relation
with the intensity of the linear light.

At the end you may add some "glow" (halo) to your tube,
set it in the surface editor panel (advanced tab) and also in the Layout > Scene > Image process.

to mke the tube look right, use edge transparency, set to opeque egges, while the surface itself is set semi-trans....
