All smoke simulations are running in real time at a surprisingly high frame rate. Once the cache system is implemented, you can even get exceedingly high resolution smoke play very fast in the viewport.

Indeed, some very neat stuff being shown, Blender 2.5 is most assuredly worth watching, put some good hard poly modelling tools in there and it will be very tempting to many, myself included, as a viable way forward.

it's going to be fun to see the rewrite arrive in a few weeks as a released version...then take it from there to next summer's next step via the open source short film project.
