I know that you can create a grayscale image and use it in LW and make hills, valleys, etc of the image. But is there any way to convent an already made non-weight map terrian (with hills and all that) into an grayscale image?

Put the object in layout, apply a black&white gradient (input parameters min/max height in y-direction of the terrain) to the illumination channel, and render the thing from above. Switch all lights off, including ambient lighting.
