It doesn't look like something you could do in lightwave. How did you do that on a boring tuesday night? If you did, it would make a cool animation of changing colors; try it and post it

Modeled a ball with something like 6 x 12 segments, bevelled every polygon outwards, subdivided it a few times, used twist and bend to break it up and then metanurbed the whole thing.
Surface has transparency, luminosity and color controlled by incidence angle in addition with some edgefade plugin I don't remember the name of right now.
Then just rendered at extreme enchanced AA with some motion blur (added some rotation over 1 frame) and DOF, and adjusted the exposure by bringing white point down to 0.4 or so, essentially burning the colors through a bit.. Some curve adjusting in PS and that was it.

Next stop will be creating different morph objects from the same base model by twisting and bending each differently and then morphmixing them all to make a nice groovy animation :)
