in the past i've been wondering about this myself, quote from cgtalk....

There is a script that comes with the maya2lw2 set of scripts called "SaveLWOsEnMasse" and this will solve the second half of the problem.

It works not only with OBJ's (what it was designed for) being converted to lwo's but also with lwo to lwo aswell.

Once all the objects are loaded into modeler just activate the script and it will make an OBJ folder in the object folder, activate the script again and it will save all objects in modeler to this folder. So once all the objects have been converted to subpatched objects this script will save all the seperate objects in numerical order for you, so they can then be loaded sequentially into layout.

Now all we need to find is a script that will convert all the seperate objects to subpatched objects before running the script I just suggested.

i think this program batch converts from .obj to .lwo

if that works, i guess one can later on edit the .lwo files and make them use SubD using a search & replace app that batch edits the .lwo files...

could work, a bit cumbersome though,...
