I would like to composite real video footage with my Form Z models, and I thought lightwave might enable me to do this. Is there a motion tracking feature that will match my model view with my digital camera view?

The answer is no. After Effects is a dedicated app just for compositing with a lot of features and lots of plugins for make anything you want form Web things to Film Quality productions. In the other hand LW can do certain level of compositing but it hasn´t motion or pixel tracking cappabilities.

Is motion tracking the same as camera matching? Will Lightwave use my real footage and virtual model and match the camera angles? I heard Electric image can do this.

Unless there's a specific plug'in I don't know
LW yet does not have any motion tracking or camera matching
features and yes to answer to your question in a sense
motion tracking is nearly the same thing (at least it works similarly)
that camera matching.

I think that AFX's latest version (6th) allows motion tracking
but only in the Pro Bundle version (more expensive).
Check adobe.com for more info…

Now on a general point if you are satisfied with your 3D tool (form Z)
and need a compo app then buy a compo app… what LW is not.

The most interessant thiing LW will allow you about compositing
is that it exports any kinds of buffers you need. But it's as you may guess
only PART of the compo work, it's usefull only if you have
a compo app like AFX to use them of course.

On the other hand if your 3D soft does'nt export buffers I'm not sure
you can go very far in compo with just AFX, get me ?

Eventually what is sure that rocks in compositing is : LW + AFX (or Combustion),
but I don't know FormZ enough to say that FromZ + AFX is good or not…
