Can anybody with an 8 core Mac please render some benchmark scenes.
Radiosity box is the one I'm interested in the most. Please post the render times to www.blanos.com/benchmark

I have a G5 mac and find myself now needing an Intel mac to upgrade to the new FinalCut.

Thanks,
Rick Hall:help:

I'm quite curious myself to see the difference of an entry level mac pro (one 2.66 Ghz quad processor) and the imac 3.06 Ghz.

unfortunately, that site is obsolete (just one PC entry for the current LW build)...

cheers

Well, I have build 1536. That is good enough.

I can probably do one for you Monday. What resolution you want it at?

The default resolution. Just load the scene and hit F9

Thanks,
Rick

ok, have a look at those radiosity specific test scenes here: http://www.except.nl/lightwave/scenes/index.htm - those are much more suited to compare real work performance...

i just have 8 core machines here, sorry... but maybe it's of interest for other users as well. all timings are with LW 9.6.0 release (build 1539), render threads set to 'auto', all other settings as in scenes.

first, test with an older 2.8 ghz macpro 8 core (2008, 12G RAM):

gallery scene, first frame
win xp x64: 4 min 56 sec
osx 10.5.8: 5 min 13 sec

gi chapel scene
win xp x64: 10,7 sec
osx 10.5.8: 11,7 sec

then, the same scenes with a current 2.66 ghz macpro 8 core (nehalem, 2009, 12G RAM):

gallery scene, first frame
win xp x64: 3 min 46 sec
osx 10.5.8: 4 min 16 sec

gi chapel scene
win xp x64: 7,5 sec
osx 10.5.8: 7,8 sec

@rick: i do not own anymore a G5, so it would be interesting to see your results here, can you post them please, if you have time?

cheers

markus

PS. please, NT, can you optimize performance a bit more for OSX? ;)

I'm going to replace my iMac G5 1.8GHz with 2 GB I use for editing and a little Lightwave, with a new Intel Mac. I have several PCs I use for a render farm with a dual core Athlon for my main LW work. I would like to replace them with a single 8 core Mac. That is my reason for the benchmark tests.

For the scene, gi chapel on the iMac: 3m 29s
the gallery scene was much longer at: 1h 51m 33s

Rick

My Mac mini does this scene http://3dspeedmachine.com/?page=3&scene=39 in 9m 14sec. A current 8 core Mac will be very quick.

Radiosity & also plane old Monte Carlo is a lot quicker on i7s & x55xx CPUs than the previous generation CPus. One 940 is quicker than 2 x E5450s, & sometimes even a 920 is quicker.

3dspeeds bench mark scene has a good mix of radiosity & rendering & is comparable to my architectural renderings when compared between my different CPUs.

P.S. 1h 00m 10sec for a prehistoric Dual 533 G4 1.5gb ram

I just realised that you are using PCs & Macs, like myself. Since you are set up with some PCs I would get a couple of i7 920s bare bone boxes with 6 or 12 gb ram depending on how large your scenes are. If you have have an old dog of a graphics card, you can put in to set up, then remove it, its just not needed & it consumes electricity while in the computer even if not plugged in at the back.

The 920 are fast, even faster with radiosity & the frame output is just brilliant for the dollars invested per box.

Render box main ingredients are; CPU, enough ram, tiny hard drive, ethernet. No graphics card once set up. XP 64 you don’t need Vista, its only a render box & you don’t need anti virus either, I never had it on my nodes.

My last 920 I put together for AU$143 per Ghz per box with12gb ram & it spits out frames sometimes quicker than my E5450 V8.

8 core mac...I bet that costed a *lot* :). I built 8-core pc one year ago and costed like 1500 euros (2x Xeon 2,5 ghz, 8 gigs of ram). Well, HP workstations are equally expensive.

slightly off the thread, but i've just run the benchmark scene through my pc box at work (q6600 quad cpu clocked at 3.15ghz - 8gig ram) and it came out at 9m01s. i will test it on my mac pro 2008 (8x3.2ghz - 16gig ram) when i get home this evening and post results for anybody who is interested.

Sorry Rick, Today was hectic at work; but I should be able to do it tomorrow. Editing projects and stuff... :D

Hi Rick,

I am caught right in the middle of a production; so my time has been sucked away. I try and get it done Friday (tomorrow) but it may have to wait until next week.

All I will say though is that the 8 core totally womps my dual 2Ghz G5.

Rick do you have this radiosity box scene? Don't see it the Newtek content folder. But then again I probably have an older one.
