View Full Version : Textures on curve

Just wondering is there a way to animate a procedal texture to follow the attached shape which is a curved pipe. or is there a way of getting a image map to follow the curve of the shape. Have been using lightwave for many years and this really bugs me as i can't work out how to do it.

If you model it straight then create a morph of the bent shape. Apply your procedural and it should animate along the bend smoothly when morphed.

I've attached an avi to show it working. It has the extention .zip, but NOTE: IT IS NOT A ZIP FILE. Change the extention to .avi and it will play.

Note to Newtek: Why can't we upload avi files?

1. You could create a uvmap and animate that using the uv animation feature in texture layers or node editor.

2. If you'd make the base of the pipe straight, you could apply and animate a texture via basic (planar/cylindrical etc) projection. Use a morph to make the pipe straight. The planar project will be applied before the morphing so it will look like it's travelling along the curve (if you animated it along the length of the base mesh).

EDIT: What he said!

Thanks, I have heard of the morph trick before, how does the animate uv option work? is there any tutorials on how to use it?

I think this post had something to do with your issue. http://www.newtek.com/forums/showpost.php?p=903428&postcount=9
If not, i'm sorry for bringing confusion to you problem =P

Create your UV and feed the displacement to the image node offset. I did this to create a snake "animation," check out Snake (http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100357). The thread has the node setup too.
